Inside the Mountain
May 7, 2007

Arise, cry aloud in the night At the beginning of the night watches;
Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord;
Lift up your hands to Him For the life of your little ones

(Lamentations 2:19).

Hate Crimes

    The House passed H.R. 1592, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007, 237-180.

    • Praise the Lord this bill did not pass with a veto-proof majority.
    • Pray that this bill does not pass in the Senate or without a veto-proof majority.
    • Pray if this bill makes it to the President that he will veto it.
    • Pray that President Bush would be willing to veto any legislation to which the hate crimes bill might be attached.

    I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, To pluck up and to break down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant (Jeremiah 1:10).

    In the meantime, churches and pastors should begin seeking additional liability insurance.

Faith-Based Hiring Protections

    The House also passed H.R. 1429, the Improving Head Start Act of 2007, 365-48.

    Before final passage there were two key votes related to protecting the civil rights of faith-based groups participating in Head Start, especially as it related to hiring protections.

    The Shuler Amendment passed 229-195. Given the lack of legislative substance in this amendment, its purpose was more to serve as political cover for those who were not voting in favor of the real amendment that could only be offered as the motion to recommit on the bill.

    The motion to recommit the bill, which would have added legally substantive hiring protections, failed 195-222.

    • Pray that as the Senate takes up this legislation, these civil rights hiring protections for faith-based groups are included in the final bill.

    God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name (Hebrews 6:10).
