Second Session Begins

Inside the Mountain
January 20, 2008

Arise, cry aloud in the night At the beginning of the night watches;
Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord;
Lift up your hands to Him For the life of your little ones

(Lamentations 2:19).

Welcome to the second half of the 110th Congress.

Looking back on last year, Congress has a few unfinished items from its 2007 Agenda such as the Intelligence Authorization (H.R. 2082) Looking ahead to this year, among the variety of issues likely to surface in 2008, citizenJoe recommends looking for headlines about Congressional activity on the economy, mortgage reform, and global warming.

  • Pray for wisdom for our leaders in Congress as they plan for the new year.

You will still be eating last year's harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new (Leviticus 26:10).

In terms of the President Bush's agenda for his final year in office, look for White House news conferences encouraging reauthorization and expansion of his AIDS proposals and his education bill, No Child Left Behind.

  • Pray that the United States would no longer be the world's largest donor of condoms (C), would stop encouraging sex work, and would promote more abstinence (A) and being faithful (B) in the ABC model for AIDS relief.

We write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication (Acts 15:20).

Last Week

The House reconvened setting the stage for the rest of the year. Its first week back was relatively low on drama. There was a lot of talk about what (not if) Congress should do to stimulate the economy.

  • Praise the Lord for his mercy in sustaining his people.

Do not concern yourselves with your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours (Genesis 45:20).

For the LORD is our judge, The LORD is our lawgiver, The LORD is our king; He will save us (Isaiah 33:22).

Next Week

In the House, the major item on the legislative program (video) next week is the postponed attempt on Wednesday to override the President's veto of the SCHIP bill (H.R. 3963). Then it adjourns early for the minority conference and the following week for the majority conference.

  • Pray that our leaders seek to know God's agenda for our nation.

Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

The man who acts presumptuously by not listening to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, nor to the judge, that man shall die; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel (Deuteronomy 17:12).

The Senate, plans to return from its non-recess on January 22, and is expected to take up the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (S. 2532). Sen. Vitter intends to file an amendment that would codify 26 years of precedent against funding abortions with federal Indian Health Service (IHS) funds except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest of a minor. It also has work to finish up on the FISA Amendments bill (S. 2248).

  • Ask God for passage of the Vitter Amendment on the Senate floor.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first to last, behold, they are written in the annals of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel (2 Chronicles 20:34).
